Your Time At The Refuge

Our program includes time for reflection, community, working, and accountability.

Discovery

Men will spend 30 days working on themselves, identifying and beginning to address the issues that led them to addiction in the first place.

Relational

Men will alternate weeks, working with one of our partner employers in Columbus, and then returning to Lancaster to continue their personal growth. They will also begin rebuilding relationships with friends and family.

Men move up to Columbus full-time, and begin working 35-40 hours a week with one of our partner employers. They also start making weekend home visits.

Launch

Men spend their final four months preparing for life after The Refuge, lining up full-time employment, housing, transportation, and how they’ll stay connected to other Refuge alumni for support and accountability.

FAQ About Coming To The Refuge

  • How much does The Refuge cost?

    There is no cost to enter The Refuge. We provide all of our services free of charge.

  • How can it be free?

    We are blessed to have many church partners and individual donors who support our mission to help men rebuild their lives. In addition, we receive funding through grants, Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services, and our workforce development program, which all help us to provide our services at no charge. 

  • I’m a smoker, am I allowed to smoke at The Refuge?

    While we are happy to help you quit, you may use tobacco and nicotine products throughout The Refuge.

  • Can I bring a cell phone?

    You are welcome to bring your cell phone, but you will not have access to it until you reach Phase Three of The Refuge.

  • Do you do the 12-steps?

    Our curriculum does not include the 12-step program, but you will have the freedom to attend a 12-step meeting once you reach Phase Three.

  • What forms of payment does The Refuge accept?

    Our services are entirely free. However, if you would like to make a donation, please contact our Chief Development Officer, Matt Hunnell. Or you can make a gift through our donation page.

  • What should I bring?

    Please bring essential clothing items like pants, underwear, shorts, shirts, hoodies, pajamas, and hats. If you do not have any of these item, don’t worry—we’ll help provide what you need.

  • What should I not bring?

    Please do not bring mouthwash containing alcohol, laptops, video game systems, Bluetooth speakers, televisions, knives, or tools.

  • What does The Refuge provide?

    In addition to all our services, The Refuge will provide you with food, all hygiene products, laundry soap, storage tote, new pillow, new bedsheets, new pillowcase, postage stamps, correspondence materials, brand new pair of Steel-Toed Rocky Boots, and all work-safety equipment.

  • Will I be able to contact my family?

    Communication and visitation begin in Phase Two. Once in Phase Three, you will be able to spend weekends away from The Refuge.

  • How long is The Refuge?

    The Refuge is 13-months divided into four separate phases.

  • How do I know if I qualify for The Refuge?

  • Can I volunteer at The Refuge?

    We appreciate all support, because of the nature of our work, volunteer opportunities are limited.

  • Is The Refuge faith-based?

    Yes, The Refuge is a Christ-centered, faith-based program. While faith is central to our program, we welcome men from all backgrounds and beliefs who are open to our approach.

  • What is the age requirement to join The Refuge?

    We accept men 18 and older into The Refuge.

  • Is there a waiting list to join The Refuge?

    Due to the structure of The Refuge, we often have immediate availability. Occasionally, we do operate on a waiting list. The best way to check whether there are beds available is to call Kevin at 614-991-0131

  • Will I be able to work while in The Refuge?

    Our initial phase focuses on personal recovery and growth. You will begin bi-weekly employment in the second phase, with full-time employment in phase three and four.

  • Does The Refuge help with job placement after completing the program?

    Yes, The Refuge has a remarkable 100% job placement for our graduates, all with competitive pay and full benefits.

  • Is family involvement encouraged?

    Family support is important, and we encourage family involvement during specific times in the later phases.

  • Is there a Refuge for women?

    We partner with our sister ministry, The Covering, to assist women seeking help. For more information, please contact The Covering at (614) 980-2824.
